Transmission Repair: Automatic vs. Manual
Manual and automatic transmissions vary in many ways, from cost to power and everything in between. Repairs for both types of transmissions are different as well. Learn about the differences between manual and automatic transmission repair!
Automatic transmissions put technology to work for you even more than with manual transmissions. Automatic is a great choice if you don't want to have to think too much and simply want to press on the gas pedal and let the car take over. If you don't care about getting serious power or having complete control, automatic is the way to go.
When it comes to cost of transmission repairs, automatic is much more expensive. However, as long as you keep up with proper oil changes and regular maintenance, automatic transmission repair won't be needed very often since there is little to no "human error" factor at work. These transmissions last much longer than manual ones on average because they handle all the gear changing and clutch work for you.
When an automatic transmission goes bad, however, it typically requires a full rebuild and can be quite costly.
Manual transmissions are known for their ability to accelerate faster than automatic transmissions, which is why they're common in sports cars. The power depends on the driver's ability to know exactly when to shift gears, whereas an automatic transmission does all the work for the driver. If you want to feel the power and be able to have more control on the response, then you'll love having a five speed manual transmission.
Since you're dealing with a clutch to switch the gears yourself, the clutch gets worn down and burnt out over time. While repairs are more common for manual, the cost is usually much less than for automatic.
